Infant Room Curriculum

Summary    Teachers   Curriculum   Daily Routine

There are three core curriculums in the Infant Program. These areas of focus are eating, sleeping and diapering. When an infant is old enough to start solids at school, we hold him/her in our laps at the table. We feed him/her from a spoon and describe what we are feeding him/her. When an infant is able to sit up, he/she sits on a rubber mat on a chair. Eventually, the child enjoys holding his/her own spoon. It is important to let him/her have one as it allows him/her to participate in taking care of his/her own body.

We encourage and support breastfeeding. Mothers are allowed to feed their infant throughout the day as desired. When we give an infant a bottle, we make eye contact with him/her for as long as they want. Depending on the infant, we remain silent, or talk and sing to them. When an infant is very young, they sleep on a large mat in the middle of the classroom.

We will help the infant fall asleep peacefully. Teachers move from rocking them, to helping them fall asleep on their backs. We pat them, sing to them or just sit next to them. When a child needs to be changed, we ask her, “May I pick you up? You need to be changed.” We also make the sign for “change” before picking him/her up. We verbalize the process and make eye contact with the infant. When we involve the child in the process, he/she will remain involved later on in her infancy and childhood.

In addition to these three core areas of curriculum, teachers also prepare monthly  individual lesson plans. These are shared with parents and kept in each child’s portfolio. The portfolio is a collection of pictures, notes and lesson plans documenting each child’s growth.
